We sailed towards Stromboli in the dark and we could see the glowing orange lava at the summit from nearly 30 nautical miles away. As we approached, we passed directly downwind of the volcano and the boat got coated in fine black ash that was raining down from the erupting volcano. We did a complete circumnavigation of the island and I caught this photo as a burst of lava was flung into the sky in the first light of dawn.

Stromboli lava flow

You can see the path of lava flowing down the side of the mountain by the steam rising off of it.
