Wow! I’ve had a great couple of days of snorkelling here. Yesterday, we went to Dos Ojos Cenotes for some diving/snorkelling (Monique, who I went with, is a diver). The water in the Cenotes was quite cool compared to the Caribbean, and so we had to wear wet suits. The cave system was super cool, and even just snorkelling, we made some tight passages between massive cavernous rooms. Several times you had to dip under the water and swim several meters so that your head wouldn’t bash against stalagmites. The navigation between the three main openings took about 50 minutes, and by the end, I was quite cool, so it was nice to get out into the 30 degree sunshine. The water was crystal clear, and beautiful blue where the sun managed to sneak into the caverns, but most of the time, you needed a light to navigate. Very fun!

Today, I snorkelled with turtles! Lots of turtles! It was at Akumal bay, just north of Tulum, and it’s a public beach. You just rent snorkel gear and head out towards the reef. If you’re lucky (I guess I was) you see turtles! I stopped counting at about 10! I also saw many baracudas, the standard Sea Urchins, a multitude of bright coloured fish, and THE BIGGEST school of fish I have ever seen.

They were pretty plain looking, but I’m guessing there were maybe a hundred thousand of them. No joke. It was awesome to see, and even more awesome to dive deep and swim through them. It was like swimming towards a moving wall that would part before you could touch it. Crazy!
